Plastic Logic - plastic electronics
Plastic Logic, an organisation which spun out of Cambridge University’s Cavendish Laboratory in 2000, has recently secured funding of $100m from investors such as Intel, BASF, Siemens, Bank of America and Oak Investment Partners.
So why have these companies funded Plastic Logic to such a high level? Because they are developing a flexible active-matrix display that could revolutionise the technology world.
Initially, Plastic Logic’s aim is to develop electronic reader products, such as document viewers, ebooks etc. However, the potential for the product is amazing. As a display, think of laptop screens to mobile phones. But plastic electronics have potential beyond screens - microchips. You can see now why they’ve attracted so much attention and funding.
For the more technical among you, here is a brief outline of how it works:

And I’d recommend watching this BBC video demonstrating the product in action.
