Google forgets to renew google.de

GoogleUnbelievable as it may seem, the mighty Google appears to have forgotten to renew its German domain, google.de. Or was it the target of a malicious hacker? If so, all that happened for period of 12 hours or so, is that the page displayed a message from tiny German company Goneo, which said “There are is no content at this domain. Please try again later”.

Google shouldn’t feel too bad. In 2003, Microsoft let the same thing happen to hotmail.co.uk, and a year later The Washington Post dropped washingtonpost.com.

But still … I think it’s safe to assume that someone got shouted at.

[edit]The Register has a couple of updates - seems it was a mix-up between Goneo, DENIC and an unsuspecting guy who ‘accidentally’ registered the domain. Comedy.
